Dear Mrs Boutilier:
My name is Jalon Ward and I'm a senior here at Sport and Medical Sciences Academy. I am currently developing my capstone project. My capstone project is researching and exploring how onlining schooling has affected children with disabilities. My project will be designed around my brother, John Ward, who is autistic and is currently struggling with remote learning. During this time of the pandemic is it hard for my brother to get the best education he deserves with the limitations of him only going to school in person two days a week. Because of this, I will be working with John for three hours a week, looking at his school work and helping him with life skills. Due to COVID-19 and John being high risk most of our time together will be in the house working on life skills such as making his own lunch, doing his laundry, and the upkeep of his bedroom area. My research question is how does online learning affect someone with a disability? This research question is directly related to my project because at school is where he would be learning these skills. He currently attends school at Oak Hill, but only being there two days in person he is missing the practice of learning those skills. Learning from home has been difficult for him because he doesn’t have all of the structure and routines that he has in the building. Being autistic he functions best with schedules and routines, and with COVID it has been hard for him to adjust. My research will help me develop strategies to help John be more successful day to day. My mentor is going to be Scott Esson, who is a para educator that works with John when he is in school. I will also be in communication with John’s music therapy coach Nancy Davis, John has a one to one, which is Scott who spends the whole day with him. Scott’s expertise will be able to help me develop strategies and complete work and activities to better prepare John for the real world. One thing that I predict will be my learning stretch is engaging John in doing the school work. He will be more open to do things around the house but school stuff on the tablet will be more difficult. By the end of my capstone I hope that John learns daily life skills and also learns to take the initiative of doing it himself as well.
Sincerely,
Jalon Ward
